Re: Add transitions, text, annotation, and graphic overlay ability to the editor
Echoing all of the other Panopto client administrators and adding that it's mildly concerning that a feature as useful and universal as this one has taken approx 3 years to reach the "Now, Next" category. I recognize that this might take more time than a monthly or biweekly developer sprint cycle to implement, but the fact that this thread hasn't dictated the importance or the need to the development team worries new enterprise customers like ours about feature prioritization at Panopto.
Re: What's new: 14.10 UI/UX Changes
What
With the release of Panopto 14.10, we are rolling out significant enhancements to the UI/UX, focusing on refining the overall look and styling of key components, along with a few helpful updates in the form of stability improvements for Blackboard LTI and Remote Recorder. In addition to the primary changes highlighted in the following sections and accompanying images, users may also observe subtle styling adjustments contributing to greater design consistency.
Home Page
The updates to the Home Page aim to create a more visually appealing and user-friendly experience. This includes ensuring that the text and spacing are easy to read, modernizing icons for a fresh appearance, adding subtle dividers for better organization, clarity, and introducing a "Recently Viewed" section to quickly find content that was recently watched.
Folder Pages
The Folder Pages are receiving a makeover to enhance its overall look and organization. This includes making sure that the header and subfolders have a unified and clean design. Additionally, changes are being made to how video cards, titles, and spacing appear, creating a more organized and user-friendly browsing experience. The design and usability of bulk select, view, sort, and filter controls are also getting a fresh update for improved functionality.
View Picker Controls and Archive Toggle
Changes have been made to enhance the design and placement of View Picker controls and the Archive toggle, streamlining them onto a single row for a more user-friendly panel.
Bulk action select controls
The design of controls for bulk selected videos has been updated, replacing text labels such as 'Delete,' 'Copy,' 'Move,' and 'Share.' with cleaner icon buttons. The panel now displays the number of selected videos, and users can exit the view by clicking the 'X' icon.
Sort Controls
Improvements to the sort controls include a more visually appealing and streamlined approach. The 'Sort by' section is now presented in a single dropdown on the right-hand side, enhancing the overall aesthetic and user experience.
Date Filter:
The Date Filter has undergone a UI update with additional functionality. The redesigned calendar view provides a more user-friendly experience, displaying two months for easier date range selection. Five new date controls have been added for quick access to date-based content, enhancing convenience and usability.
“What’s new” component:
This guide is designed to highlight the new features of the latest release right within the app, starting in 14.10 with reviewing some of the UI/UX enhancements highlighted here. It is designed to show only once after the latest update and can be exited at any point in the process.
LMS Folder View
Changes to the LMS Folder view (the view of Panopto within Canvas, Moodle, etc.) are designed to move toward parity of both design and functionality between VCMS and LMS views - including the addition of redesigned and upgraded sort and date filter controls, view toggle buttons, video views, buttons, component layout, fonts and spacing.
**In addition to these UI/UX updates, we have a few additional improvements on the way:
We are improving our course copy experience for Blackboard customers to ensure they can copy course content with our new Blackboard LTI integration. Work has begun to remove our dependencies on 3rd party browser cookies and will continue in 2024. Our Remote Recorder has also been updated to automatically reconnect with hardware devices that the operating system may have renamed.
Why
Our ongoing mission is to elevate the user experience within Panopto continually. By incorporating these changes, we aim to enhance the platform's intuitiveness and ensure alignment with evolving industry design elements and best practices.
How
As these UX changes are minor, they will be seamlessly applied to your Panopto libraries during the rollout. Panopto administrators and content creators need not take any action. For viewers, the updated UX will refresh the look and feel of Panopto libraries, requiring only minor adjustments in end-user behavior.
We invite you to explore the refined UI/UX in Panopto 14.10 and welcome your feedback. As always, we appreciate your ongoing support as we strive to provide you with an exceptional Panopto experience.
Best regards,
The Panopto Team
Ability to permanently swap primary and secondary video areas
In the recorder or in the editor - please add the ability to choose what recording source to place in each section of the web player. Normally, the presenter video goes in the top left smaller area and the screen capture goes in the right larger area in the player. We need to have the ability to select what video to put where. Sometimes, like in out Business Communication classes, the teachers want the presenter video to be in the larger area and the screen capture in the smaller area. Conversely, in the Video podcast, this feature will allow for the presenter video to shown in full screen and the screen capture to show in the smaller PIP screen in the bottom right.
Currently the only way to do this is to manually download both streams and create a new session and place the videos like i am requesting. Then, after processing, set the Video podcast to PIP to match what i am requesting. This is time consuming and inefficient.
Maybe you only need to have a feature in the video editor or in Settings window to "Swap video sources in player" that will automatically do this! That will be cool and quick for the end user! I think Panopto already knows how to do this, just need to automated!
Please do this asap. thanks.
Allow Customization in Sending Panopto Quiz Scores to LMS
We are using Panopto videos with embedded quizzes to check student comprehension during the lecture. Students are required to complete the questions, but can watch the video and complete the questions as many times as needed.
Unfortunately, if a student receives 5/5 (for example), and then rewatches the video to study and gets 3/5, the 3/5 overwrites the previous result in Canvas.
Similarly, if a student opens a video to study after the due date, the quiz result is reported back from Panopto with the new date, and thus Canvas marks it late.
Per communication in Support Request 00691449, Panopto reports the most recent grade, even if the score is lower than a previous attempt, and regardless of the date. This strikes me as a good feature to be able to customize.
My suggestion would be Panopto lets users choose whether to report "most recent" or "most recent if higher than previous".
On the Canvas side, I imagine Canvas will need to change their "late response" logic to only mark something as late if a score hasn't previously been received from Panopto. Since Panopto would not know the assignment due date, it could not accurately choose what scores to send based on date.

Bulk delete empty folders from past terms
We have Panopto set to provision the courses automatically which works well so faculty can just get started in recording in the recorder without logging into Canvas and clicking the Panopto link to provision. However I am getting questions from faculty on wanting to delete previous terms empty folders as they are all listed in the Panopto client. My hope is to bulk delete the old folders and not have them provision again.
Ability to control order of streams on player and in editor
It seems like the order that multiple streams is random when ingested for processing. I originally thought that it was dependent upon the order of channels in our remote Epiphan Pearl recorders, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
So we capture multiple sources, including PCs - the template by default recorders the PC input, because some classes will sporadically use a laptop in class. Since the capture is automated, it seems similar to capture that signal and delete it as necessary later on. But since the sources don't seem to be consistent on upload, often the PC input ends up being the S2 source in the Panopto player. If no PC is connection, the system shows a "no signal" or black. I thought by re-ordering the input channels on the recorders that it would be the last source that could be selected by a viewer, so that the main S2 source would be by default the wideshot camera on playback.
So the feature request is to either force the player into putting the streams in the order that they are on in the remote recorder, or to allow someone in the Editor to swap the sources for playback. This second option isn't optimal, as it requires a manual edit to do this, but it would be an option if some faculty want to use it. Right now, the only option is to go into the editor, delete the streams you don't want and reprocess the file.
So can there be a way to force which stream is the S2?
Thanks!
Elaine
Setting default view for primary and secondary streams
In some of our grad courses, we have multiple secondary streams captured on a remote recorder, and we'd like to use the content (slides) stream as S1 rather than say a wide angle video of the lecture theatre.
Ability to turn off ratings at the folder and individual video level
Some academics have asked for their ratings to be turned off but at their level and not globally. Much like if the students can or can not download the video.
4k recording capability with Remote Recorders
We've been upgrading our lecture capture classrooms - our older set up had multiple cameras for capturing both the chalkboards and the faculty. With the upgrade, we're reducing the system to two cameras - 1 auto tracking camera and 1 4k Aja Rovocam that we then bring into our Epiphan Pearl 2 recorders as a 4k source. That is our wideshot in the room, and then we create several 1080p channels for recording - depending on the number of chalkboards, we will do something like the following:
Pearl 2 inputs:
- AVer TR333v2 tracking camera
- Aja Rovocam (wideshot)
- Left chalkboard
- Middle chalkboard (in rooms with three or more sets of chalkboards)
- Right chalkboard
- PC 1 feed
- PC 2 feed
We do multiple PC fees because often classes use two projectors in the room - in say a Physics class, they will have a Power Point presentation on their laptop and use an experiment camera for a second source to show a close up of a physics experiment to the students. We record locally on the Peal 2s as we re-purpose the videos for courses for OpenCourseWare (OCW) publication.
Unfortunately, because of the Panopto API settings with the Pearl 2s, when a recording happens, the signal defaults back to 1080 recording, rather than 4k recording. For our post production editing for OCW we'd love to have the local 4k recording for editing in Premiere. But this would require Panopto changing the ingest for recording to give a 4k option for recording.
Is this something on the roadmap for Panopto?
Thanks for considering this idea....
Elaine
Continuous Live Streaming
Hello Panopto Community and Development Team,
I'm reaching out to request a enhancement to Panopto's capabilities: the ability to facilitate continuous live streaming (24/7) from Remote Recorders or an RTMP source. Currently, we are utilizing other services to meet this need, but integrating this functionality into Panopto would greatly benefit our operations.
Current Limitation & Proposed Feature:
The main limitation we're facing with Panopto is the 24-hour maximum streaming duration. We propose the introduction of a continuous streaming feature without this time constraint.
Example Use Cases:
- Live Campus Views: Offering real-time streaming of various campus locations to showcase campus life.
- Internal TV Playlist Broadcasting: Continuous broadcasting of an internal TV channel playlist.
- Live Research Monitoring: For ongoing academic or scientific research that requires constant observation.
Optional Recording Feature:
While continuous streaming is our primary focus, the ability to record select portions of the stream (e.g., the last 24 hours or specific timeframes) would add value, allowing us to capture important moments as needed. We dont want Panopto to be a CCTV solution, but some basic recording options would help the research side.
Incorporating continuous live streaming into Panopto would significantly enhance its utility for a wide range of applications, especially in educational and research settings. We believe this feature would be a valuable addition to the Panopto suite and would be greatly appreciated by the user community.
Thank you for considering this request. We look forward to the possibility of this feature becoming a reality in Panopto.
Remember: Video isn't just about recording; it can also be about capturing the moment as it happens - live. ;)
