Notification of an issue affecting audio capture for some Remote Recorders on Windows 11 Update 22H2

Bill WolfBill Wolf Panopto Employee

Hello - We want to let you know about an issue affecting audio capture for some Remote Recorders on Windows 11 Update 22H2

What is the issue?

Remote recorders running on Windows 11 22H2 may fail to record audio under certain conditions. Specifically, if the computer is rebooted audio may not be recorded until a user logs into the computer.

In this scenario the audio histogram in the Remote Recorder preview screen may also be misleading. To verify audio will be captured Panopto recommends using the Live Audio Monitoring feature or recording a short session.

Which versions of Panopto are affected?

Remote Recorder version 12.x

How do I tell if this affects me?

Any customers who have Remote Recorder machines running Windows 11 22H2 with Realtek audio hardware/drivers. Other hardware may be affected but this has not been confirmed.

How do I mitigate the issue?

There are 3 options.

  1. vSet up an auto logon after a restart. If you do not wish a user to be logged in, you may also schedule an auto logoff a short time later. This can be scripted.
  2. Manually log into each machine after restart.
  3. Use Windows 10. If using Windows 11, do not take the update to 22H2.

When will this be resolved?

We are working diligently with a Microsoft engineer to determine the root cause of this issue. Once the root cause is known additional updates will be provided regarding an ETA.

We are continuing to work towards a resolution with Microsoft.

If your organization is considering the use of automatic logins as a workaround, please consider Microsoft's Autologon utility for a seamless implementation. The logged-in user does not require any privileges for the workaround to be successful.

In order to address a security vulnerability, Microsoft is now requiring a user to be logged into the machine before audio can be captured (as of Windows 11 22H2). Panopto engineers are currently investigating alternative methods to ensure audio capture continues to work as expected. At this time the recommended workaround continues to be configuring an auto-login after reboot.

Additional details regarding a programmatic solution from Panopto will be provided by June 16.

The next update regarding a programmatic solution from Panopto has been delayed by 1 week. Additional details will be available by June 23.

Due to Microsoft's new restrictions on recording audio without authentication starting in Windows 11 22H2, a Windows login will be required following a reboot in order for the Remote Recorder to successfully record audio. This requirement exists at the operating system level and cannot be automated by Panopto at this time.

We will update our Remote Recorder prerequisite documentation and installer to reflect this requirement and any configurations needed and the documentation will be posted to this thread as soon as it is available. In the meantime, please refer to Microsoft's Autologon documentation.

Instructions for configuring Windows 11 for the Panopto Remote Recorder have been published on our support site.

We will leave this thread open pending the release of the updated Remote Recorder which will include a reference to these instructions.

The installation process for the next Remote Recorder version will include a call to action to implement one of the suggested mitigations. That release is currently on our Q4 product roadmap.

We are in the process of scheduling the release of the updated Remote Recorder installer that addresses the new requirements. Another update will be provided by January 12th.
