Warning for students submitting videos using Canvas

When the option to Allow students to insert videos is set to TRUE, it may not be clear to students that they will not have the ability to edit their content after inserting the content into the Canvas rich content editor (RCE).

There are a few proposed solutions:
IDEAL STATE: Allowing the student to edit the video until the assignment is submitted or the discussion item is posted (versus current state where once the student clicks Insert, it is not editable.)

  1. IDEAL STATE: Allowing the student to edit the video until the assignment is submitted or the discussion item is posted (versus current state where once the student clicks Insert , it is not editable.)
  2. Option 1: Enabling a warning prior to the insert button being clicked (image 1)
  3. Option 2: Making the Start over link into a button with some text about not being able to edit after inserting (image 2)

  • Excellent idea - it would be consistent with the way other assignments are submitted and would result in less confusion if a student realizes they made a mistake.

  • This is one of the major reasons that I am leaving this setting off. Is it nice that teachers no longer need to create an assignment folder…sure, but that is where the upsides really end and the downsides of the new option and the rigidity of its implementation of it make it untenable for most situations that I can think of on our campus.
