Generating token for User-based Application

I am trying to generate a token for a User-based application. According to the documentation: "The client will need to obtain user credentials, the user name, and either the password or the authorization code, and send those directly in a request to the OAuth2 token server to retrieve an access token"
I tried using my school credentials as username, and password. But this is not working. How would I get an authorization code? Application Key? User Key? I have no idea where to get these. Please me as specific as possible
