Granular Download Permissions for Zoom LTI Recordings in Panopto

We use Panopto integrated with Canvas LMS and Zoom (via the Zoom LTI Pro integration). When a Zoom meeting is recorded to the cloud, the recording is automatically transferred to the associated Canvas course folder in Panopto.

Currently, download permissions in Panopto are applied globally across all videos. This presents a challenge: we want to allow students to download videos uploaded or created directly in Panopto (e.g., lecture recordings, screencasts), while restricting downloads specifically for Zoom meeting recordings, which may contain sensitive information or discussion.

We request a feature that allows download permissions to be managed based on the video content source (such as "Meeting Integrations") or a metadata tag. Alternatively, we propose that Zoom LTI-imported videos have downloads disabled by default, with the option for admins or creators to enable downloads as needed.

This functionality would provide institutions with more flexibility in managing content access and aligning with privacy and academic integrity policies.

Key Benefits:

  • Protects sensitive Zoom content (e.g., office hours, student discussions)
  • Maintains accessibility by allowing download of instructor-created materials
  • Reduces administrative overhead compared to managing permissions manually per video

Thank you for considering this enhancement.
