Maintain Creator Access to Archived Course Folders in Panopto Integrated with Blackboard
Background:
Each summer, we enforce an archive policy in Panopto: any video not viewed in three years is archived, and a year later, those videos are deleted. We audit affected content, notify instructors whose videos are archived, and provide instructions for accessing the archive. However, due to the Panopto-Blackboard integration, once a Blackboard course is archived, the corresponding Panopto course folder revokes access for all users regardless of their "creator" status or video ownership. As a result, instructors lose access to their archived videos unless the videos were saved to their personal Panopto folder.
Problem:
When instructors follow our instructions to access archived content, their course archive appears empty, despite videos being present in Panopto’s archive. We can see the videos as administrators, but instructors cannot view or restore their own content, which prevents them from preserving videos they wish to keep.
Requested Feature:
Please allow Panopto folder creators and video owners to retain view and restore access to their content in archived course folders, even after the associated Blackboard course is archived and standard permissions are removed by the integration. This would enable instructors to follow archive restoration workflows as intended and prevent unnecessary loss of important instructional materials.
Impact:
This change would ensure creators can manage their own archived content regardless of Blackboard course status, saving administrative overhead and supporting academic data retention needs.
