Share Lecture Recordings to Individual Students?
Hello, I am a student at a university that utilizes Panopto to record audio and visual for lectures, but it’s up to the professor if they want to enable it in that specific course. I have disability accommodations that allow me to make personal audio recordings, but for the way I learn, this would not be helpful for me.
I reached out to both my professor and my dean about this, but wanted to ask here too. My question is:
Is it possible for a professor to enable audio and video recordings for lectures, but allow only one student to access those recordings? This way, they can still uphold their policy to not allow recordings to be available to the entire class, but my accommodation will actually work for me.
If not, could this become a feature? I love Panopto, and use it for every class and lecture.

Hey David!
At this time, we cannot enable downloading on a per-person basis. However, I've taken your situation/feedback and added it to our feature request "User based download permissions / Custom role for podcasts". This is a request that our developers are still considering, so I don't have an ETA on when/if it'll be implemented. That said, you can keep an eye on our release notes!
In the meantime, I recommend circling back to your professor and asking that they either provide you with a downloaded version of the video in private, or they can temporarily enable downloading during a period you coordinate with them.
This is something that is absolutely possible currently, and we do it all the time here. To do this the instructor will need to create a sub-folder in their Panopto course folder, remove the default "::Viewers" group from the sub-folder (leaving it in place for the parent folder so there aren't any errors), then share either the individual videos or the entire folder with the learners that need it.
It's also possible to create a custom role based on the "Viewer" role to add an override for the Download permission. I've decided to leave this role so it isn't generally available, but folks can request we add it to their content.
Thanks for the context, Michael!
You're right that there are other workarounds that I didn't add in my post, such as creating a custom role and then adding that user to that role or copying course material into a separate folder that only one user has access to. It helps a lot to see how other organizations get around this exact situation. But to enable these permissions specifically per person (such as through a user's settings) isn't possible.
