Can creators retain access to their Panopto videos after course deletion?
Hi all,
we are currently in the process of cleaning up old Moodle courses. During this work, we noticed that all user access to Panopto videos is removed as soon as the corresponding Moodle course is deleted or access rights are revoked. Since permissions are managed through the Moodle–Panopto LTI integration, this behavior is expected.
However, we are wondering about the following:
Is there a way to ensure that the original creators (instructors) of videos — those who recorded or uploaded their content via the Moodle Panopto LTI — retain access to their videos in Panopto even after the Moodle course is removed or access is withdrawn?
Thanks in advance for any insights or recommendations!

Hi Wolfgang,
We ran into the same problem. We do not keep our Moodle courses perpetually, but when we delete them in Moodle it empties the course-based groups ({Course title}::Viewers, {Course title}::Creators, etc.). I would check two things:
- I think video owners retain access (all sessions must have an owner) but they lose access to the parent folder (this relies upon a course group) which makes it hard for them to locate the video
- If you're using an LTI integration that creates LTI groups then those might not be deleted with the course
A minimal test would be: create a course, add an instructor and a student, upload a video as the instructor, view it as the student (to have them added to the LTI group), delete the course, and double-check the session and the membership of the groups it's shared with.
Finally, to preserve Panopto course groups after Moodle courses were deleted, I wrote a python script that uses the SOAP API to copy course groups to internal groups. We run this before we delete a term's worth of courses, to preserve access. It assumes our course category structure and would need to be adapted before being used.

Hi, first of all: thank you!
I (re)did the test of new course, video upload as instructor, etc.
The uploader of the video (instuctor) loses all access to the video after course deletion. Even with a direct link to the video, a no permission error shows up :(
But your script sounds promising! Will have a look into it. Adapting course categories and maybe a filter of users, cause we only want the intrsuctors to keep access, not the students, and it sounds like it would help a lot.
Thanks!
