Functionality to edit the duration of captions

Hi,
I would like the opportunity to set an end time for a caption. We have experienced several times that it is impractical or disturbing for one caption to remain until the next one comes on. It could simply be to select an end time in the editor. If one does nothing, it should automatically be when the next caption states.

Ugly workarounds.
Captions should never appear for any more than 5-10 seconds.
I agree, we also need the ability to set durations for captions. Has anyone figured this out?
