Notification of an issue affecting completion percentage in statistics dashboards

Bill WolfBill Wolf Panopto Employee

Hello - We want to let you know about an issue affecting the completion percentage in statistics dashboards.

What is the issue?

The Percent Completed column in Panopto’s statistics dashboards is not being calculated for all views. We found that approximately 1% of all views are affected as of last year. No data was permanently lost as a result of this.

Which versions of Panopto are affected?

All Panopto Cloud versions are affected.

How do I tell if this affects me?

The completion percentage will be blank for users with qualified viewing data. See section 2.5.c of our Session Statistics article for more information about how the field is calculated.

How do I mitigate the issue?

In most cases, “minutes delivered” can be compared against the video length to estimate the completion percentage. Additionally, the Viewer Engagement report contains the raw data that can be used to determine the completion percentage.

When will this be resolved?

We are actively working on a mitigation strategy to ensure that completion percentages are accurate no later than one week after a user has viewed a given video. We expect to introduce this mitigation within the next week. The full repair is currently expected to be released by the end of February.

Completion percentages have been repaired and are accurate up to 24 hours in the following environments:

    • AP
    • AU
    • CA
    • EU

Approximately 75% of the affected data in the NA Cloud has been repaired and we expect it to reach the same level of accuracy as the other environments by February 24th.

The issue is now mitigated in all environments. All incomplete completion percentage data is being automatically recalculated on a nightly basis. We are still investigating the root cause and will provide another update within the next week.

Panopto developers have implemented and analyzed the additional logging. Based on the data gathered, the underlying issue may be fixed. One additional update to the logging is needed to confirm this is the case or to inform our next steps. Additional details will be provided by July 20.
