Capture a region of an screen

Original Post

Carlos Coronel, 6/19/2018 at 2:08 PM

The Windows or Mac recorder should be able to allow the end user to select just a "region" of the screen to capture, instead of the entire screen. Sometimes, we just want to capture an specific program window, and not the entire screen as this could be very distracting for the viewers.

If I had more votes I would add them. Just got a request for this today from a customer already familiar with Camtasia/ScreenFlow. All I could do was recommend "possibly" using a secondary screen and moving his app window to that one and then only on a Windows PC. https://support.panopto.com/s/article/Use-Multiple-Monitors-for-Screen-Capture-for-Windows

  • This would be a helpful feature. Most other screen recorders have it.

  • It's going to be two years since the original post, what is the status of this request?

    @dave Hannan -- please reply.

  • "Hoping"

  • It has been almost two years and still nothing.... Panopto is really slow in coming up with upgrades and new features. I believe their feature update cycle is too slow, don't know the reason why. Meanwhile, companies like Yuja comes up with new features and upgrades every three months like clockwork. For their own sake, they need to start catching up soon or they will be reduce to niche players.

  • Please can we have this basic feature asap. Other recorder software has it. I'm no techie but it really can't be a major technical challenge, surely?

  • As @Carlos Coronel says, the update cycle seems woefully behind other leading companies and the list of outstanding features is getting frustratingly long. Please don't become a Blackboard Inc and get slack just because people are locked into using your product by their institution. It's a fast-moving market out there so it won't last which would be a shame because there's lots to like with Panopto and it could be near perfect with just a few key feature improvements (e.g. captioning engine/accuracy). Now is the time to invest in developer capacity...

  • Agreed. Also, if one could change the application window on the fly while recording, would be great too.

This would be a helpful feature since more the screen resolutions are getting higher resulting in unnecessarily large video size. Secondly, even less known platforms have such a feature. We just moved to Panopto. I was surprised to find out that Panopto does not.

  • This would come in handy with those giant 36" monitors that are equivalent to two screens but still act as only one screen. The slide show is super tiny when recorded on those.

  • "Panopto Capture can record specific applications and browser tabs."

But it puts a message that the tab is being shared across the top of the webpage...which is commonly where things I need to click in a demo are located. I can't find a way to get rid of that message other than stopping the share...so this would be really helpful.

  • This is a must-HAVE!!! Please do this.

That would have been the first 1/2 of 2019...

More than 4 years later we're now halfway through 2023 and we still can't do this.

The desktop recording clients feel abandoned.

  • @Chaz Barbour you are correct! There are so many feature requests that have fallen through the cracks!!! Hopefully, they will get working on them soon. After all, with the new "licensing model," Panopto is jumping to the list of "most" expensive" software on our campus!!!! They should be working hard in adding and providing value to their customers! Enough said.

  • Being able to set a section of the screen to capture would make a world of difference for our instructors. We have a lot of instructors who want this feature, but it's pretty critical for those whose office computers have the 3 foot wide, single screen display. Doing a full screen capture records the whole length of the screen. The options to record a window or tab just aren't flexible enough to record a lecture that includes PPT slides, online resources, documents, and more. The only option these instructors have is to record in another program then upload to Panopto or edit their Panopto recording after using multi-stream capture to show which window or tab they want the student seeing at that point.

The most ideal option would be having the option to select a section of their screen to record. That will allow them to drag materials in and out of the recording window, allowing the instructors to help the students focus on just the materials they're currently talking about.

  • Being new to Panopto, I'm pretty disappointed to see that this is so slow to being added! It's standard on most (all?) other platforms.

By not having this feature you're pushing customers to other programs or expecting them to spend a significant amount of extra time to edit their recordings in ways that they wouldn't have to on another platform.
